Weber Applauds Next Step Toward Versatile Test Reactor

On Thursday, February 28, 2019, Department of Energy Secretary Rick Perry announced the launch of the Versatile Fast Neutron Source, also called the Versatile Test Reactor (VTR). This project was authorized by the Nuclear Energy Innovation Capabilities Act -- legislation sponsored by Senator Mike Crapo (R-ID) and Congressman Randy Weber (R-TX14) that was signed into law last Congress.

"After four years of bipartisan and bicameral efforts, my bill, the Nuclear Energy Innovation Capabilities Act (NEICA) was signed into law last September. This legislation authorizes the construction of an advanced research reactor facility, which is a critical part of ensuring innovative materials and nuclear fuels research and development can take place in the United States. Nuclear energy research must be validated through direct experimentation in the lab, and this facility will make that possible," said Congressman Randy Weber. "America has a long history of leadership in nuclear science, and it is critical we maintain that leadership. I am happy to see Secretary Perry following the direction of Congress and committing to construct this facility. Today's announcement is another landmark moment in this journey!"
